TEAK BOOKCASE (small)
British, 1950s. Rarely seen Heals of London bookcase designed by Christopher Heal. Quality teak over ply construction with lovely contrasting tapering legs. A single adjustable shelf and comes with original removable glass doors.
Son of furniture designer Ambrose Heal, he later became Design Director of the iconic family firm from 1952 and was at the forefront of the companies move towards Mid Century Modern & Scandinavian aesthetics. This range was brought out at the tail end of the British Utility Furniture movement c1949 and to give an idea of it’s design significance a piece from this modular range is kept in the V&A archive. This bookcase has been in the same family from new.
Measures 76.5cm long x 69cm high x 30cm deep.
In very good refinished condition with just very minor signs of wear commensurate with age by way of some marks to the top surface. Has been delicately finished by hand, the legs have been freshly ebonised and coats of Danish oil applied.
