About

Matt Wicks is a documentary director based in Bristol, dedicated to compelling, observed and entertaining films that tell the stories of people from all walks of life.

His work is characterised by an intimate, collaborative approach, filmed with a lightness of touch to produce work with weight but that remains accessible.

Relishing in complex institutional access he has observed neurosurgeons (Brain Hospital, Ch5), probation officers (Out Of Jail And On The Streets, BBC 1) and trial attorneys at work (The Trial Of Ratko Mladic). At the lighter end of the spectrum was Channel 4's The World’s Most Expensive Presents, a playful portrait of the super rich and luxury market, as well as work on high profile factual brands such as the The Dog House (Series 1 -3), The Secret Life Of 4 & 5 Year Olds and The Supervet.

In recent years Matt has increasingly taken on Edit Producing roles allowing him to broaden out genres, in particular taking on more presenter led series.

A growing passion for the stories of young people has led to Series Directing Ice Stars for CBBC as well as the Broadcast Awards nominated, New Boys In Town, following Syrian child refugees as they settle into life in the UK.

A self-shooter, Matt first picked up the camera in 2006 on a 24 part, micro budget series exploring life on a traditional English country estate. Over a decade later that has developed into a refined and considered filming style which often sits alongside the work of established factual DOPs.
