J.P. HULLY FOR P.E. GANE

‘FAMULUS’ CHaIR

British, 1935. Acquired from Ken Stradling of The Stradling Collection.

This British modernist piece uses beautiful steam bent birch to create an elegant cantilever design. P.E. Gane Ltd was formerly based on College Green, Bristol until their showroom, facories and warehouses were destoyed during The Blitz bombings in 1940. Famulus chairs were also retailed by Heal’s of London and even caught the eye of author Virginia Woolf who owned a pair that I understand are still on display today in her National Trust home, Monk’s House.

It is well documented that J.P. Hully’s time at Gane crossed over with that of Marcel Breuer, the godfather of modern design, embodied in the Bauhaus. There are striking similarites in the cantilever design of this chair and Breuer’s own bent ply constructions. Prior to his time at Gane’s, Hully designed for both Gillows of Lancaster and Bath Cabinet Makers.
