LORD ROBERTS WORKSHOPS
1960’s OAK CHEST OF DRAWERS
British, 1963. A unique piece produced by the Lord Roberts Workshops (for injured ex serice personell) comprising of a 4 drawer chest and single bookshelf in a mix of light oak and quality light oak veneer finish. In many ways this piece is typical of the ‘utility’ drawers of the post war period often utilised by the War department / Air ministry but with some lovely additions. Stamped to the underside of the bookshelf. The Lord Roberts Workshops were design to help disabled soldiers and sailors to gain the skills for futire employment following their service.
The top draw can function either as a normal drawer or as a desktop via an interesting hinged system allowing the drawer front to pull flat. There is a small shelf within this drawer. The chunky joinery to the exterior gives it striking look. It is quite possible that this could be a one off piece.
Measures; 130cm high x 84cm wide x 51cm deep (54cm including handles).
In very good refinished condition. This piece has been lightly refinished, removing the old varnish by hand followed by multiple coats of beeswax and polish to bring out the grain and protect it. One very minor repair to a small venner chip to the edge of the 2nd drawer front.
